There are various ways of travelling around Poland, by plane, train, bus and car, but another option is to arrive at Ognisko Polskie and enjoy a wonderful concert, with songs and music that transport you the length and breadth of Poland.
Our ‘couriers’ for this special journey are all members of Fiołki, which is part of Mazury, one of the largest and most established Polish dance groups in the UK, having been founded in 1949. Fiołki perform regularly, and to great acclaim, at the “Biesiada” Summer Party held annually at Ognisko Polskie, as well as appearing in other events at the Club.
The program for this very special evening, on National Independence Day, includes songs from Warsaw such as Umówiłem się z Nią and Warszawskie Dzieci. A clear message from the former capital of Poland, Krakow, appears in a song called Nie Przenoście Nam Stolicy. The distinctive culture of the Gorale (Highlanders) can be heard in songs such as Karcmarecka and Szumi Jawor, with Kashubian songs another part of this musical journey.
Such a comprehensive repertoire stems from the commitment Fiołki has to upholding traditional Polish culture. In a 71 year history, Mazury has performed for the Royal family, in West End theatres, operas, cultural and charity events. The group celebrated its 65th anniversary with a performance at London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall before embarking on a tour of Poland (culminating in a performance in Wawel’s Royal Castle in Krakow). In 2018, Mazury performed at the Royal Albert Hall, to celebrate the centenary of Poland’s independence and in 2019 Mazury’s 70th anniversary was marked by a sold-out performance at The New Wimbledon Theatre.
