Chłopi (Peasants) presents a fascinating insight into life, love and morals in a nineteenth century Polish village, which provides plenty of humour, drama and tragedy. This film is based on the novel of the same name, written by Wladyslaw Reymont (1867–1925), who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1924.
In this tragic story a peasant girl Jagna is forced to marry an older, wealthy farmer, Boryna, although she is in love with his son Antek. As her duplicity comes to light, Jagna becomes the object of envy and hatred and is dramatically exiled by the villagers.
This most recent film version of the novel is presented in an animated format that resembles sumptuous oil paintings, and is directed by Hugh Welchman (with a Certificate 15 rating). Please note tickets for this screening are initially available exclusively to members before going on general release, and each member is currently entitled to purchase two tickets.
