Elżbieta Stanhope discusses her Grandmother’s
poignant and historic Journal
When renowned potter and ceramic artist, Elżbieta Stanhope, discovered a journal written by her Polish grandmother, Wanda Marylska (nee Kozakowska) the contents were a revelation to her. The journal contained a detailed and very emotional account of Wanda’s experiences as a nurse between 1914-17, and provides an eye witness testimony of the consequences of war, particularly on the ‘unknown soliders’ fighting in the front lines.
Wanda began nursing at the age of 43 after the outbreak of the first world war, working for the Red Cross. She was based at the Wilenski railway station in Warsaw, attending wounded soldiers brought back from the front line. Wanda discovered a love of nursing and went to Moscow to gain a nursing qualification, then continued nursing for the Red Cross in Moscow and St Petersburg, together with her friend Princess Mimi Dolgoruki.
After receiving permission to leave Soviet Russia, Wanda arrived in England, which appeared like a beautiful dream come true. Her granddaughter Elżbieta had the same reaction when arriving in England in 1963, leaving Communist Poland behind her.
